I choose cycle paths and designated cycle routes whenever I can, then minor roads instead of main roads where possible.

Sometimes there is no reasonable alternative route, and I need to use a main road. Even then, I will choose to ride those sections outside of the busiest times of day. I don’t ride in rush hour traffic!

Only about 2% of my mileage so far has been on major roads in busy traffic.

I will let you pass

I prefer a happy driver in front of me to an annoyed one behind. I’m much safer that way.

I will help you pass me without undue delay. Unless the road is really busy, most drivers wait less than a minute.

If no natural overtaking opportunity comes up, then I look for the next safe place to pull off the road and let you by. I don’t stop where I would impede the flow of traffic.

What I ask of you

I do my best not to delay you, and in return I ask you for patience until a safe passing opportunity arises, and then a safe pass.

I occupy the lane I am riding in: I expect overtaking drivers to move entirely into the opposite lane, to pass at a moderate relative speed, and not to cut in before properly past.

Not like these examples.

Too close.
Much too close.
Cutting in.

Highway Code

The recently revised UK Highway Code gives detailed guidance on overtaking, particularly with regard to cyclists.
